Cheyenne woman arrested on forgery charge for falsified insurance document

Traffic stop citation leads to felony warrant and arrest in Cheyenne forgery case

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Cheyenne woman was arrested Friday after authorities discovered she allegedly falsified an insurance document for court.

Aruna Lewis, 59, was taken into custody on Dec. 6 at her residence after officers identified an active felony warrant for forgery. Officer Ahearn responded to a trespassing report at the location and discovered Lewis had a warrant signed on Nov. 27 by Judge Chambers, according to a police report.

The investigation began after Lewis was issued a traffic citation on Sept. 22 for failing to stop at a stop sign. During the stop, she told Deputy Manuel Cabrera she had insurance but did not have proof at the time. Lewis later submitted a document to Laramie County Circuit Court claiming her insurance was valid through Sept. 3.

Detectives determined that the document had been altered. The expiration date, originally July 3, was handwritten as Sept. 3. Jason Gilbert, an Allstate Insurance agent on Converse Avenue, confirmed that the policy had expired earlier due to nonpayment, according to the affidavit.

Lewis was taken to the Laramie County Detention Center without incident. She faces a felony charge of forgery, specifically for “uttering,” or passing a falsified document.
