CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Cheyenne man received a prison sentence of 17–20 years on Monday after pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection to a fatal shooting in March.
Antonio Navarrete, 23, admitted to killing 25-year-old Cortaevius Williams during an early-morning confrontation at Navarrete’s home on King Court. Initially charged with first-degree murder, Navarrete pleaded guilty to the lesser charge, leading to Monday’s sentencing.
On March 23, officers responded to a shooting call at around 1:30 a.m. on King Court. They found Williams suffering from a gunshot wound and attempted lifesaving measures. Paramedics took him to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
According to police, the incident began earlier that night with an argument between Navarrete and Williams outside a local bar. Williams allegedly smashed the windshield of Navarrete’s vehicle before both men left separately. Later, Williams went to Navarrete’s home to collect personal belongings. Another dispute broke out, resulting in the fatal shooting.
Police arrested Navarrete hours after the shooting and booked him into the Laramie County Jail. He originally faced charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault.
After reaching a plea agreement, Navarrete admitted to manslaughter. A judge sentenced him to a minimum of 17 years and a maximum of 20 years in prison.
