Candidate filing deadline approaching for Wyoming’s General Election; voter registration open

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The deadline is approaching for independent candidates seeking election in Wyoming to file to appear on General Election ballots this fall.

Independent candidates have until Monday, Aug. 29, to file, according to the Wyoming Secretary of State’s Office. Independent candidates wanting to run for federal, statewide, state legislative or county offices must submit petitions signed by registered voters. Details about the number of required signatures and other independent candidate filing requirements are available from the Wyoming Secretary of State’s Office.

In Laramie County, the deadline for candidates to file to run for college and school boards as well as fire and soil conservation districts is also Monday, Aug. 29. Candidate filing information is available from the Laramie County Clerk’s Office.

Voter registration is open in Wyoming. Open voter registration runs through Monday, Oct. 24. Wyoming will then offer same-day voter registration provided people cast a vote the same day they register to vote from Tuesday, Oct. 25 up to and including Tuesday, Nov. 8, the day of the General Election. People must bring an accepted form of identification in order to register to vote in Wyoming.

Absentee voting for the General Election will open in Wyoming on Tuesday, Sept. 23 and run through Monday, Nov. 7. In Laramie County, voters will still be able to drop off absentee ballots at the Laramie County Elections Office, 309 W. 20th St., on Tuesday, Nov. 8. However, absentee ballots cannot be accepted at polling locations throughout the community on General Election Day.

People voting in person in the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 8 will need to show an accepted form of ID as required by Wyoming law. Accepted forms of ID include:

  • Wyoming Driver’s License
  • Wyoming ID Card
  • Tribal ID Card
  • Valid U.S. Passport
  • U.S. Military Card
  • Driver’s License or ID Card from another state
  • University of Wyoming Student ID
  • Wyoming Community College Student ID
  • Wyoming Public School Student ID
  • Valid Medicare Insurance Card
  • Valid Medicaid Insurance Card
