CASPER, Wyo. – It was almost like any other season opener in Casper, the annual routine that signals the start of another school year and the approaching cooler weather.
Fans and family shuffled into Casper’s high school stadiums as they prepared to play teams from Cheyenne high schools, and athletes and band members lined the field.
This year is undeniably different, however. On Friday, August 28, 2020, high school athletics took a cautious step into an unknown new season. Friday would be the first high school competitions since state basketball was abruptly canceled in March to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Friday, only closest family members were allowed into the Natrona County High School and Kelly Walsh High School stadiums, both limited to the 1,000 total occupancy allowed outdoors by state health mandates.
NCHS’ director of athletics Spencer Cantrell addressed the crowd before the start of Friday’s game against Cheyenne Central, reminding those in attendance why they were spread apart and wearing face masks.
“The whole goal this season first and foremost is to complete it,” he said.
Kelly Walsh ended the night with a 54-14 victory against Cheyenne South. NCHS fell to Cheyenne Central 35-21. Final scores for all Wyoming high school football games follows after the gallery.
