CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Youth displayed their proficiency in sheep and goat breeding Saturday at the Laramie County Fair.
The annual weeklong festival at the Event Center at Archer opened its midway carnival area to visitors this weekend. Youth animal breeding competitions and a tractor pulling show headlined Saturday’s entertainment offerings.
The midway will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the remainder of the fair. Entertainment in store for families includes inflatable water slides and bounce houses, a petting zoo, pony rides, magic shows, mini-golf, carnival games and more.
The day’s premier event was the Heartland Truck & Tractor Pull at the center’s motorsports park. In a manner not dissimilar to drag racing, tractor drivers shot across a dirt path while competing for the fastest times and distances. Their vehicles displayed immense horsepower as they tugged along heavy tractor sleds.
“Any of us could win it,” said William Pfiser of Nebraska, a tractor driver competing in the classic modified category. The event featured tractors across six categories, each one based on a tractor’s weight. “It just depends on where you go on the track and leave.”
A driver needs to constantly be reading the track as they maintain control of their tractor, Pfiser added.
The high-horsepower competition is part of a series hosted by Outlaw Truck and Tractor Pulling Association. Aside from Wyoming, the organization is holding shows across Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa this summer.
