Colorado resident dies on I-80 in head-on crash Monday

CASPER, Wyo. — A Colorado resident died early Monday in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 west of Laramie, according to a preliminary Wyoming Highway Patrol report.

The trooper’s report indicates the crash occurred around 1:12 a.m. near milepost 286. A head-on collision occurred between a westbound Peterbilt combination unit and a Volkswagen Jetta that was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed, the report said.

Colorado resident Jerson Cerna Sanchez, 24, was identified as the deceased in the report. The report indicates that a seatbelt was not in use. 

There have been 71 deaths on Wyoming roadways this year, compared to previous years to-date:

  • 60 in 2022
  • 55 in 2021 
  • 60 in 2020
  • 93 in 2019
