CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Cheyenne Police Department has expressed a desire to become accredited by The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, otherwise known as CALEA.
According to the commission’s website, The CALEA Accreditation program seals are reserved for use by those public safety agencies that have demonstrated compliance with CALEA Standards and have been awarded CALEA Accreditation by the Commission.
CALEA says that their accreditation program provides public safety agencies with an opportunity to voluntarily meet an established set of professional standards, which require:
- Comprehensive and uniform written directives that clearly define authority, performance, and responsibilities
- Reports and analyses to make fact-based and informed management decisions.
- Preparedness to address natural or man-made critical incidents
- Community relationship-building and maintenance
- Independent review by subject matter experts
- Continuous pursuit of excellence through annual reviews and other assessment measures
The Cheyenne City Council, during their meeting on March 9th, 2020, refereed a memorandum supporting the Cheyenne PD’s interest in seeking accreditation from CALEA to the Public Service Committee
“The goal of accreditation with CALEA is to improve the relationships with
the community, ensure adherence to policing best-practices, and reduce risk and liability for the City of Cheyenne,” the resolution of support said.
