Head of CFD on the status of this year’s event: ‘We will see what May brings’

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The CEO of Cheyenne Frontier Days, Tom Hirsig, was asked point-blank about the status of this year’s Daddy of em’ All during Tuesday evening’s Cheyenne City Council meeting.

The question was asked while the Council was discussing the new Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Cheyenne and Cheyenne Frontier Days in regard to the costs of security for the annual event.

“When are we going to know if this is going to occur or not?” Councilman Pete Laybourn asked Hirsig at the April 27, 2020 meeting.

“I wish I had the answer to that question. We are just starting to roll out the regulations. Until we see all those and have a chance to work with City-County Health, the Governing Body, and both the State and City, I just can’t answer that question right now.”

The question for Hirsig was a timely one in light of the announcement of other large-outdoor rodeos being canceled recently. Just in the last week both the Calgary Stampede and the Greeley Stampede were canceled by organizers due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

“From an organizational standpoint. We will see what May brings. And hopefully, then we can have a better understanding of what is best for the health of the community,” Hirsig said.

Mayor Orr asked the CFD CEO is the organization had a “drop dead” date when it came to deciding whether or not the event would go forward.

“We feel like if we are going to have to cancel our event it seems like it would have to happen around the first week of June at the very latest. We have the carnival moving up here and concessions potentially. We can’t let those people know as late as July,” Hirsig said.
