CASPER, Wyo. — The National Museum of Military Vehicles opened near Dubois this summer.
The museum is among nominees to become USA Today’s “Best New Attraction 2020.” People are able to vote for the museum on the “USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice” website.
As of noon Tuesday, the National Museum of Military Vehicles is in third place in the voting, behind “St. Pete Pier” in St. Petersburg, Florida and “Planet World” in Washington D.C.
People are able to vote each day until 10 am Monday, Dec. 21. April Ingles shared some information about the museum on behalf of the Wind River Visitors Council.
The $100 million museum opened in August. It is located about eight miles east of Dubois on US Highway 26.
“Inside the 140,000 sq. foot museum, visitors will find nearly 400 fully restored vehicles and also historically significant firearms,” Ingle shared. “The museum works to honor the sacrifice and service of Veterans and their families.”
“What started as a private collection with one tank purchased by Dan Starks, ignited something monumental the acquisition of hundreds more tanks, jeeps, trucks, motorcycles, landing craft and other military vehicles.”
The museum contains the “Chance Phelps Theater” named in honor of U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Chance Russell Phelps, a native of Riverton.
It also features an “Unknown Soldiers Weapons Vault,” the “General George C. Marshall World War II Gallery,” other galleries, meeting rooms and a library.
“The museum is now the biggest collection of military rolling stock in in the U.S. outside of the armed forces themselves,” Ingle shared.
