CASPER, Wyo. — A Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office deputy was investigating a crash on I-80 in Wyoming on Friday when another vehicle lost control and struck the deputy’s vehicle, according to SCSO.
The deputy responded to the report of a crash near mile marker 87 on I-80 at around 7:40 am.
“On arrival, the deputy learned that the driver lost control of their vehicle on black ice, sliding off of the roadway into the median and colliding with the steel cable barrier,” SCSO said.
The deputy was still on scene at around 8:15 am and was in their vehicle which was parked in the median with emergency lights flashing.
Around that time, “another driver passing by lost control of their vehicle and collided with the deputy’s vehicle.” SCSO added that the vehicle was traveling 60-65 mph before the driver lost control and hit the deputy’s vehicle.
The driver of the passing vehicle was cited for driving too fast for the conditions. The deputy sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, but later released to recover at home.
“It never fails. When winter conditions hit, it always takes folks some time to adjust their driving behaviors,” said SCSO spokesperson Jason Mower said. “We’re very lucky. This could have been much worse. We want everyone to make it home safe for the holidays, so please pay attention, buckle up, take it slow and be careful out there.
