Power outage forces I-80 rest area closure with hurricane winds howling in Wyoming

CASPER, Wyo. — The Summit Rest Area along I-80 between Cheyenne and Laramie has been forced to close on Wednesday due to a power outage, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation.

The power outage is impacting the rest area’s water well. WYDOT is working to reopen the rest area. The parking area near the building is closed, but the semitruck lot remains open.

Wyoming is seeing some hurricane force winds on Wednesday with 93 mph gusts recorded west of F.E. Warrent Air Force Base.

I-80 is seeing gusts over 70 mph in areas between Cheyenne and Laramie.

An extreme blow over risk advisory is in effect on I-80 between Cheyenne and Elk Mountain and on I-25 between Cheyenne and Buffalo. Those stretches are closed to light, high profile vehicles.
