Wyoming rescuers get rescued after being stranded overnight on windy Chief Joseph Highway

CASPER, Wyo. — Rescuers who helped in the rescue of snowmobilers off of US 212 (Beartooth Highway) over the weekend found themselves stranded on WY 296 (Chief Joseph Highway) on Sunday night, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation.

“They were rescued Monday as the highway was being reopened,” WYDOT said on Tuesday.

WYDOT said that snow plows were able to get to the end of Chief Joseph Scenic Highway on Tuesday morning “following a wind event which caused major issues on WY296 and across northwest Wyoming.”

A WYDOT station recorded gusts of 88 mph on Cheif Joseph Highway on Monday and Cody saw a gust of 84 mph.

WYDOT said that wind continues to cause issues on Tuesday across northwest Wyoming. Road condition information is available from WYDOT.
