Structure fire shuts down portion of Lincolnway

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Cheyenne Police Department has closed the 700 block of East Lincolnway due to a structure fire.

The closure was announced via Facebook on Tuesday, June 21 around 12:30 p.m. The Auto Locker and a neighboring building were the structures that had gone up in flames.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area until further notice.

Gov. Mark Gordon’s focus is on keeping Wyoming an energy state, the incumbent told Politics in the Park attendees Thursday.

Gordon came a day after other gubernatorial candidates spoke, citing a scheduling conflict that took him to Gillette for a conference, to express his desire to serve Wyoming for another term. He said he is “completely committed to Wyoming.”

The third Politics in the Park also featured Robyn Belinskey, another challenger against Republican U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney; all Republican candidates for Wyoming secretary of state; candidates for #Wyoming House District 43 and 61.

After four days of competition, Brinley Palmer and Aurora Catrina Soto brought home state titles in the Little Miss and Tot Miss categories for the Little Miss #Wyoming State #Pageant.

Brinley and Aurora took part in several competitions against other girls from across the state, winning in their respective categories. These competitions included talent, evening wear, casual wear, interview, and personality.

Brinley, 8, also won awards in Academic Excellence and Community Service. Aurora won Wyoming’s Next Top Model, Wyoming State Contest, and Wyoming Sweetheart.

Despite poor audio quality and interrupting sprinklers that soaked equipment, several political candidates, including U.S. House candidate Harriet #Hageman, presented their platforms to voters Monday evening during the Laramie County #GOP’s #Politics in the Park.

Joining Hageman for the first of five planned Politics in the Park at the Lion’s Park Amphitheater were candidates for House District 9, Senate District 7, state superintendent of public instruction and #LaramieCounty sheriff.

U.S. House candidate Harriet Hageman is scheduled to join a host of candidates tonight for the first of several Laramie County GOP–hosted Politics in the Park events.

Scheduled to run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Lions Park Drive, Politics in the Park aims to give local candidates an opportunity to introduce themselves and express their positions on various issues.

Craft beer lovers from across the region found a place to congregate this weekend.

The Wyoming Brewers Festival kicked off the 26th edition of its yearly two-day event Friday evening at the Cheyenne Depot Plaza, with vendors from across and beyond the Cowboy State offering brews to eager attendees.

With all of the event’s proceeds going to the nearby Cheyenne Depot Museum, the festival gives a piece of the city’s history major priority while local breweries also get a place in the spotlight.

In speaking proudly through a microphone to those who congregated at #Cheyenne’s Juneteenth celebration Saturday morning at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, Rita Watson acknowledged there was both tremendous progress made and more work to be done to honor and support Black Americans. But along with the others gathering for the event, Saturday marked an occasion to celebrate — and that in itself, to Watson, was a blessing.

“It’s very important to me to see us moving forward,” Watson said. “When I first came here, we didn’t recognize any Black activity. Now, we’re recognizing it and giving it a place in the community and in history that it needs. … It’s important for Black people to know our history, it’s important for white people to know our history, and we have not been doing that. Now, I see a little more movement toward teaching everybody about the history of all our groups.”

The small but passionate group of attendees was treated with scattered activities and vendor booths as speakers talked about #Juneteenth and its value to the Black community.

The Cheyenne #Police Department have announced the retirement of its #K9, Jano, after six years as an officer.

Jano joined Cheyenne PD in 2016 and was the department’s only scent-specific K9.

His handler, Detective Smith, was promoted to the department's Detective Bureau. Due to the time commitment of Smith's new position, it was determined that Jano should retire. He will be living out the rest of his life with Smith and his family.

The education coordinator at the #Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, Jean Krause, can’t stand to see the city and area’s #history not be preserved for future generations.

This is part of the reason the retired schoolteacher took the job three years ago, after all. And with Krause in charge of the children’s day camps the #museum holds throughout the summer each year, she’s playing a major role in making sure that the memories made stick with the youngest generations.

“We have a lot of history here and I don’t want that to be lost,” Krause said. “I want these kids to be engaged with it. … When we went out to the FFA farm [and] went on the trolley, one of the little guys said, ‘Trolleys do exist. They’re real.’ Unless they’re experiencing those [things], they just think everything is TV.”

Laramie County School District 1 announced today that the Arp Elementary summer food service location is shutting down.

This is due to low participation in that area. The last day for service will be Friday, June 17.

The next closest locations for food service are Rossman Elementary, 916 W. College Drive, and Johnson Junior High, 1236 W. Allison Road.

The College National Finals Rodeo continued throughout Tuesday as Go 2 results were finalized in all nine events at the Ford Wyoming Center. in Casper.

Competition will continue Wednesday and go on until the championship rounds Saturday — and several athletes from Wyoming schools look to be in the hunt for silverware early on.

Following several days of catastrophic flooding that had been hammering Yellowstone National Park, the park said Tuesday evening that the northern portion of the park would likely be closed for a “substantial” amount of time.

A park release said major sections of road, particularly in the Montana portions of the park, were “completely gone” due to flood damage between the north entrance near Gardiner, Montana, and the northeast entrance near Cooke City, Montana.

The park said that it is “probable” that road sections in the northern part of the park will not reopen this season due to the time required for repairs, noting that there will be no inbound traffic at any entrance to the park “until conditions improve and park infrastructure is evaluated.”

Aurora Catrina Soto will be representing Cheyenne in the Toddler Division at the Little Miss Wyoming State Pageant this week.

The Little Miss Wyoming State Pageant has been going on for 17 years as a nonprofit youth scholarship pageant for girls ages 0–15.

Aurora will be competing in the Tot Miss, which is for ages 3–6.

Janelle Jones’s fight to improve crosswalk safety and bolster crosswalk safety awareness across Cheyenne and Wyoming got a big boost earlier this month.

Jones told Cap City News on Tuesday that the ForMak 5K race on June 4, which she helped organize, had approximately 715 people registered and raised $146,000 for Wyoming’s Safe Routes to School program in its first year of its existence, making the race at Lions Park a roaring success.

Burns may be a sleepy town of under 400 people in eastern Laramie County, but Saturday was when droves of visitors had it beaming with energy.

The town hosted the 2022 edition of Burns Day on Saturday — held traditionally during the second weekend of June — in a one-day event that included plenty of live entertainment, food and drink, a parade and numerous other activities on display all throughout the town’s streets.

Cheyenne was the location for the United States Police Canine Association Region 14 Annual Certification this year.

The event took place from June 3 to June 5.

Two teams from the Wyoming Department of Corrections — Sgt. Randall Speiser and K-9 Copper and Sgt. Jory Shoopman and K-9 Zeke — did extremely well in the narcotics detection competition, placing first and third, respectively.

Severe storms across southeastern Wyoming resulted in a tornado briefly touching down Tuesday afternoon in rural Niobrara County, the National Weather Service in Cheyenne said.
