CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The city’s Finance Committee will review a memorandum of understanding with the school district regarding school resource officers. It will then offer a recommendation on whether the council should approve it.

This memorandum, discussed Monday, Aug. 8, is between the City of Cheyenne and Laramie County School District 1 to set out the terms by which the city will provide police services to the school district.

According to the memorandum, school resource officers shall be called upon by the district in the following situations:

  • Assaults or battery
  • Felony or violent criminal offenses, including but not limited to robbery,
    extortion, arson, or sexual assault
  • Use or possession of dangerous weapons by a student, including but not
limited to knives, guns, and explosive devices
  • Sale, possession, or use of illegal drugs, tobacco/nicotine products, or
    alcohol
  • Threats of physical harm to school employees or the public
  • Any other information received or obtained by the District that involves
    property rights.

The district will pay for the services, and the city will in turn provide the district with seven officers and one supervisor for the 2022–23 academic year, or until Aug. 31.
