CHEYENNE, Wyo. — June flooding in Yellowstone National Park stranded some visitors and vehicles, but it also stranded a park front loader on North Entrance Road in Gardner Canyon.

The North Entrance area was heavily damaged by flooding in June. The entrances to the park were temporarily closed due to flooding, rockslides, and mudslides, and the park experienced power outages at multiple locations, Yellowstone’s Public Affairs Office said at the time of the flood. Visitors were evacuated from the northern portion of the park.

The park has been undergoing reconstruction of both the North and Northeast Entrance road corridors — a project that’s expected to take several years — but in the meantime, there are substantial temporary solutions created to reconnect the areas before winter sets in, park officials said.

Recently, soldiers from Montana Army National Guard’s 1-189th General Support Aviation Battalion used a CH-47 Chinook helicopter to save the stranded front loader. Yellowstone National Park shared the following photos of the operation.
