CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Twelve Cheyenne high schoolers were recognized for their contributions to the Mayor’s Youth Council during the City Council’s regular meeting this evening.
The Mayor’s Youth Council, a program of the city’s Office of Youth Alternatives, provides students with the opportunity to learn about local government and engage in community service projects. High schoolers between the ages of 14 and 18 are selected to serve on the council for one school calendar year, from June to May. This year, the members planned activities including a free holiday crafts and Santa Claus visit at the Paul Smith Children’s Village and a citywide Day of Giving Youth Event.
“I have learned invaluable lessons about the importance of being an involved citizen and engaging with my community,” said Elizabeth Stump, chair of the Youth Council, during the meeting. “In the end I know that I’m very excited for the future of Mayor’s Youth Council and I also know that those who are a part of it will go on to accomplish great things … because of the lessons they have learned [from] the council.”
