GILLETTE, Wyo. — The pilot and the passenger of a single-engine plane that crashed into a field south of Gillette’s airport at about 12:08 p.m. July 29 were taken to the hospital, Campbell County Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said this morning.
The two were the only ones aboard the plane, which had been attempting to take off of the airport’s runway but crashed into a hay bale, Reynolds said. The passenger, 46, was transported to a hospital in Colorado to be treated for injuries. The extent of the injuries was unknown, but she was in stable condition at the time of the deputies’ report. The pilot is 60.
Airport personnel contacted the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board, Reynolds said. Because the location of the crash was off the runway, on a private road and land, law enforcement was able to put caution tape around the area and monitor it until the agencies arrived at the crash scene July 31. The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office didn’t take further action.
