1 dead following morning commercial vehicle crash in Sweetwater County

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Colorado man is dead following a commercial vehicle crash in Sweetwater County this morning.

The incident took place at 8:18 a.m. on Interstate 80 / US 30 at milepost 106.8 near Rock Springs, according to a Wyoming Highway Patrol incident report.

A Peterbilt combination unit was westbound on I-80 and was negotiating a right-hand curve. The vehicle failed to negotiate the curve and exited the roadway to the left, crossing through the median cable barrier, the release states.

The driver attempted to correct the vehicle to the right; however, the vehicle continued into the median, overturning a quarter-time onto the passenger side. The vehicle was hauling a hazmat load of diesel fuel. The tanker trailer was breached, and a large amount of fuel spilled into the median, where emergency crews worked to contain the spill.

Driver inattention and fatigue are listed as being contributing factors to the crash.

Road conditions were wet and the weather was raining and cloudy at the time.
