GILLETTE, Wyo. — A collaborative effort between Yellowstone National Park and multiple partner organizations gave over 100 Yellowstone bison a new home last week.

As part of the Bison Conservation Transfer Program, the herd was moved from Yellowstone to be managed by Assiniboine and Sioux tribes on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Poplar, Montana.

This relocation is part of greater efforts to expand the range of the bison and give Indigenous tribes the opportunity to manage herds on their own lands through the InterTribal Buffalo Council.

“Since 2019, a total of 414 Yellowstone bison have been transferred to the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes at Fort Peck,” Yellowstone National Park said in a press release. “Nearly all of those bison and their offspring have then been further distributed to 26 Tribes across 12 states in partnership with the InterTribal Buffalo Council.”
