GILLETTE, Wyo. — A Gillette man died last night after a teenage driver struck his vehicle on Echeta Road, Gillette Police Capt. Kelly Alger said Wednesday.
The man — who has been identified as 70-year-old resident Gary M. Sharkey — succumbed on March 5 to injuries sustained during a two-vehicle collision involving a 2001 Kenworth water truck and a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado at the intersection of Echeta Road and Foothills Boulevard, per Alger.
Sharkey had been operating the water truck on Echeta Road when the Chevrolet, operated by a 14-year-old girl, entered the roadway from Foothills Boulevard, resulting in a crash. After the vehicles collided, the water truck tipped over onto its side and the pickup overturned onto its roof, per Alger.
The resulting investigation closed Echeta Road for several hours after Sharkey and the 14-year-old girl, who sustained only minor injuries, were transported to Campbell County Health for treatment, Alger said. The roadway was reopened to motorists in the early morning hours of March 6.
Sharkey was pronounced deceased at 10:55 p.m., according to Campbell County Coroner Paul Wallem, who said he died of crash-related injuries.
Per Alger, there were no indications of possible impairment, and the crash remains an active investigation.
