Pickleball players to converge in Casper for state tourneys

(Casper Pickleball and Sports Complex)

CASPER, Wyo. — The newly opened Casper Pickleball and Sports Complex at 1911 Dunlap is the venue for two upcoming state tournaments.

A Wyoming Senior Olympics pickleball tournament for players ages 50 and up will be at the Casper facility June 1–2. The Wyoming State Pickleball Championship, open to players as young as 5, will be at the indoor complex July 12–14.

Casper Pickleball and Sports Complex Chief Operating Officer Sam Dia is managing the tournaments. He said both are open to resident and nonresident players.

To participate in Senior Olympics, athletes must turn 50 by Dec. 31. Skill levels are recreational, intermediate and advanced. Wyoming Senior Olympics age groups per each skill level range from 50–54 to 90–plus.

Registration for the June 1–2 tournament opened March 5. Go here to register. Registration ends May 20 or when all sports are filled up.

The Saturday–Sunday tournament offers divisions for men’s and women’s doubles, mixed doubles and men’s and women’s singles, all skill levels. There is also a 2–Round Robin 8 option in which no partner is needed and athletes play with and against all other players.

The tournament is open to eight teams per skill level. The format is round robin followed by single elimination. Players do not need a partner to register for doubles play.

Dia said players could consider the June 1–2 pickleball tourney in Casper as practice for the Wyoming Senior Summer Olympics in Cheyenne from July 31 through Aug. 4.

Players may also improve skills by participating in Saturday–Sunday clinics and coached games April 20–21 at the Casper Pickleball and Sport Complex. Register at the Wyoming Senior Olympics website. The rescheduled April clinics replace those canceled March 18 and 19.

The Wyoming Senior Summer Olympics pickleball tournament in Cheyenne, also managed by Dia, is a qualifier for the 2025 Summer National Senior Games in Des Moines, Iowa. Registration for all Senior Olympic sport events in Cheyenne, including pickleball, runs May 1–July 20.

The Wyoming State Pickleball Championship, taking place July 12–14 in Casper, is a qualifier for the year-end United States Championship in Dallas, Texas.

Dia expects a big turnout of players from surrounding states.

Age categories range from 5–18 up to 70 and above, and players register based on skill level. Children must turn 5 by Dec. 31, 2024. Registration is open and continues through June 30. Register here.

People may take advantage of an early registration discount by signing up before April. Fees increase incrementally over time.
