CASPER, Wyo. — Winter weather conditions are making for hazardous travel in and around Yellowstone National Park.
The park announced Thursday afternoon that Beartooth Highway, or US Highway 212, will have a delayed opening as a result of winter weather conditions that were expected to bring an additional 2 feet of snow and gusting winds. The National Weather Service is calling for more snow in the park this weekend.
Beartooth Highway is located east of the park’s Northeast Entrance between Red Lodge, Montana, and Cooke City, Montana. It was scheduled to open today, but will instead remain closed through the weekend.
Temporary travel restrictions or closures can occur at any time without notice. Have flexible travel plans and watch for quickly changing weather conditions, the park said in a news release.
The highway will open to the public as soon as conditions allow. Check for road statuses and updates on the Montana and Wyoming departments of transportation websites.
Temporary road closures
Due to current and anticipated winter weather conditions and significant snowfall, some roads in Yellowstone National Park are, or will be, temporarily closed due to hazardous driving conditions.
The East Entrance and road from East Entrance to Fishing Bridge Junction were temporarily closed until today, as were the South Entrance and road from South Entrance to Grant Village.
The road from Canyon Village to Tower Fall (Dunraven Pass) remains temporarily closed.
Those with plans to visit are warned to anticipate additional road closures due to inclement weather and dangerous driving conditions.
Roads and entrances will reopen once conditions improve, the park said.
