CHEYENNE, Wyo. — At around 2:42 p.m. July 14, Albany County, Laramie County Fire District 10, Laramie County Fire Authority, Medicine Bow National Forest, and Emergency Management Agency responded to a smoke report west of Curt Gowdy State Park. A fire, which was in timber, was held to 8 acres. A lightning strike caused the fire, according to a press release by the LCFA.

Partners on the scene included Albany County, LCFD10, LCFA, Medicine Bow National Forest, Wyoming Red Cross, Vedauwoo, Wyoming State Parks, Albany County Sheriff and EMA. The County Combined Communications Center facilitated coordination. At its peak, there were approximately 54 personnel, 20 apparatuses and four aircraft on scene.

“Crews worked through the night to contain the fire; however, smoke will remain visible most of the day today,” Division Chief of Residents LCFA Josh Van Vlack stated. Crews will remain on scene throughout the day to ensure full containment.

Fire Chief Jason Caughey emphasized the importance of fire prevention measures. “Take the time now to protect your property, mow your grass, declutter your yards, and remove flammable materials like hay bales and wood piles from the sides of your homes,” he said. He added that with current weather conditions and dry fuel loads from last summer’s rains, tall grass poses a significant fire risk.

Caughey urged residents to assist by strengthening their safety zones around their homes and outbuildings. “It is not if but when we have another event like this,” he stated. For property assessments and safety recommendations, residents are encouraged to call LCFA or email at media@lcfawy.com. Van Vlack and Rusty Dunham are ready to assist.
