CASPER, Wyo. — The air crackles with an electric tension as bugling calls of bull elk echo through Yellowstone National Park.

It’s the start of the rut — the mating season.

Once serene meadows become a battleground for dominance, visitors are being warned to keep their distance as bulls become unpredictable and prone to aggression.

Yellowstone National Park officials issued the warning this morning, saying people have been severely injured during this time of year. Elk run quickly and can change direction without warning. Attacks can be unprovoked.

Park officials are reminding visitors that they are responsible for their own safety. They offer the following tips:

  • Always keep at least 25 yards, or the length of two full-sized buses, from elk.
  • If an elk approaches, back away immediately.
  • Look around corners before exiting buildings or walking around blind spots.

Photographers are reminded to use their best zoom lens to help them keep distance.

If an elk charges, visitors should find shelter in their vehicle or behind a tall, sturdy barrier as quickly as possible, the park said. If there’s no shelter available, simply run away.
