GILLETTE, Wyo. — After wildfire tore through many areas of northeast Wyoming this summer, acres of land relied upon by wildlife and ranchers alike were damaged.
To help ranchers who rely on the land for their livelihood and ensure healthy mule deer habitat, the Mule Deer Foundation announced Monday in a press release that it will be matching donations up to $20,000 to kick off its Northern Wyoming Wildfire Relief Effort. The organization has partnered with Gillette’s Big Lost Meadery for the fundraising drive, with a goal of raising a total of $60,000 by Oct. 31.
According to the release, donations will help fund fencing repair for ranchers and ensure that new fencing is also wildlife-friendly, allowing mule deer and other species to safely pass through.
The funding will also help provide grass seed to burned areas that have lost vegetation. With the impact of fire on the landscape, there is in many areas a clean slate to prevent the arrival of unwanted invasive grasses. Quick action on restoration efforts can ensure native species have a chance to reestablish in areas before competition from invasive species returns.
“This situation also presents the unique opportunity for MDF to move in immediately after the fire to prevent noxious invasive vegetation taking over while encouraging native plant growth,” The press release said. “Together we can improve the ability of wildlife to move throughout the landscape while helping these hard-working ranchers recover and sustain their ability to make a living.”

Based in Utah, the Mule Deer Foundation focuses on conservation and education efforts related to both mule deer and black-tailed deer, with chapters in 19 states.
