CASPER, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Transportation has announced the closure of Wyoming Highway 70 over Battle Pass in the Sierra Madres for the winter season.
The closure went into effect this morning due to hazardous road conditions, including strong winds, drifting and blowing snow and heavy snowfall overnight.
WYDOT crews in Baggs and Saratoga determined that the current weather conditions and forecast warranted the closure to ensure the safety of travelers. The section of WYO 70 between mile markers 27 and 50 will remain closed until spring when crews can safely clear the accumulated snow.
This year’s closure comes slightly earlier than last year’s closure on Dec. 4. In recent years, the closure dates have varied, with WYO 70 closing on Nov. 29 in 2022, Dec. 10 in 2021 and Nov. 14 in 2020.
Motorists are advised to plan their travel accordingly and seek alternative routes while WYO 70 remains closed. WYDOT will continue to monitor weather conditions and provide updates on the status of the road closure.
