Wyoming Highway Patrol reminds drivers to save Christmas lights for their trees

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — It’s that time of the season where Christmas lights adorn every conceivable stationary object, from trees and houses to storefronts, light poles and more.

However, the Wyoming Highway Patrol is reminding drivers that, as pretty as it may look, they cannot add Christmas lights to their vehicles if said lights include blue or red.

That’s according to a social media post from the WHP, which tells residents that this isn’t just the highway patrol being a Grinch — it’s a Wyoming statute.

“W.S. 31-5-928 — Except as required in W.S. 31-5-929 and this section, no person shall drive or move any vehicle or equipment upon any highway with any lamp or device thereon capable of displaying a red or blue light visible from directly in front of the center thereof,” the statute reads.

Christmas lights are one of the best parts about the holiday season, but they’re distracting and, in some cases — like while driving — potentially dangerous.

“So while this might look cool and be festive, we would to remind you that it is illegal,” the post states. “Please remember to stay safe when celebrating this season!”
