Food Bank of Wyoming Partners with Cheyenne Nonprofit, Providing Essential Resources with Dignity and Empathy

In a world where asking for help can often feel overwhelming or shameful, Cheyenne-based
nonprofit Needs Inc. has emerged as a place of hope for individuals in need. Known for being a
comprehensive provider of essential resources, the organization serves as a food, clothing and
hygiene pantry with a mission deeply rooted in preserving the dignity of the individuals it helps.

“We’re all about essential needs,” said Needs Inc. Executive Director Kristen-Erin Balderez, “but
we have a special interest in preserving human dignity when it comes to participants receiving
those services.”

This commitment to dignity is central to the organization’s work, ensuring that every individual
who walks through their doors feels respected and valued.

Breaking Barriers of Shame and Judgment

For many, the act of seeking assistance can be fraught with feelings of shame and fear of
judgment. Needs Inc. recognizes this and works to create an environment of understanding and
empathy.

“I feel like it’s the most important piece,” Balderez shared. “Too often, people in vulnerable
populations feel deterred from seeking help because they fear judgment. Many who provide
assistance lack the lived experience to truly empathize, which can taint the experience for those
already struggling.”

By prioritizing dignity and understanding, Needs Inc. strives to remove these barriers, making it
easier for individuals to access the help they need without feeling diminished.

Meeting the Growing Demand

The need for assistance has been steadily climbing. Currently, Needs Inc. serves an average of
160 households daily, with some days reaching over 300 households.

“When I first started, we were averaging 130 households per day. Now, two years into the gig
economy, we’re serving 160 households daily on average — and the numbers keep growing,”
Balderez explained.

Despite these challenges, the organization remains committed to its mission. “It’s pretty wild, but
the need is consistent. We’ll never see a day when we only serve 30 households again.”

Strengthening Partnerships to Sustain Service

Meeting such high demand requires strong partnerships and a robust support system. Needs Inc.
credits its collaboration with Food Bank of Wyoming as a critical factor in its ability to serve the
community.

“The food bank relationship has been wonderful and is growing stronger every day,” Balderez
shared. “Their quick response to any kind of concerns or challenges has been crucial in helping
us maintain this level of care for our community.”

While the work is demanding and often thankless, the support from partners and the community
helps lighten the load.

Lived Experience as a Guiding Force

The heart of Needs Inc.’s approach lies in its team’s deep connection to the community. Many
staff members bring personal experiences of navigating resource systems, lending a unique
perspective to their work.

“I’ve been a single mom most of my adult life and have had to navigate food pantries and
resource systems,” Balderez said. “Learning how to access resources is a skill, and my lived
experience helps me connect with the people we serve. They’re my people.”

This shared understanding fosters a sense of belonging and trust, making Needs Inc. a place
where individuals feel supported, not judged.

Finding Ways to Say “Yes”

Above all, Needs Inc. is committed to saying “yes” when others might say “no.”

“We’ll find ways to say yes because it’s already hard enough for people. We’re all trying to do
the best we can with what we have,” Balderez emphasized.

By prioritizing empathy, dignity and community, Needs Inc. continues to lift individuals out of
challenging circumstances, helping them find the path to self-sufficiency and hope.
