CASPER, Wyo. – Search and rescue crews are looking for a missing single-engine plane and its Green River pilot Wednesday morning near Little Mountain, southwest of Rock Springs.

The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that the pilot had been reported missing after the private aircraft left Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport but failed to reach its scheduled destination in California.

A Utah Air National Guard Apache helicopter with nighttime search capabilities joined the search in remote terrain Tuesday night and located an area of disturbed ground near Little Mountain, an update said Wednesday morning. The findings were confirmed at 8 a.m. by a Wyoming Civil Air Patrol fixed-wing aircraft.

As of 8:30 a.m., the Wyoming Army National Guard had deployed a Huey helicopter equipped with emergency medical and hoist capabilities to support the ongoing search and rescue efforts, while ground crews had been staged nearby since 6 a.m.

“Once again, we urge everyone to refrain from conducting independent searches,” Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office said. “Last night and again this morning, ground crews encountered interference from independent search parties in the area. In the event of an aircraft crash or emergency landing, the sheriff’s office is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the scene for NTSB investigators.

“Unauthorized individuals entering the area may face citation, arrest, and prosecution.”
