CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Cheyenne Police Department is hosting a free Citizens Police Academy from Monday, March 24 through Wednesday, April 23 at the Public Safety Center in Cheyenne.
That’s according to a release from the CPD, which states that this is a five-week academy that will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Additionally, there will be two Saturday field classes conducted for firearms and K-9 training.
“The academy is an interactive program that takes citizens behind the scenes of the police
department,” the release states. “It is designed to help increase awareness and understanding of how policing is conducted while strengthening the relationship between community members and police officers.”
The curriculum will include a variety of courses, including constitutional law, criminal investigations, human trafficking and property crime. Additionally, students will learn about de-escalation and use of force, traffic enforcement, dispatch and vehicle pursuits. It will also include practical exercises, so that participants will gain a working knowledge of the duties and responsibilities required to be a law enforcement officer.
The release states that applicants must be at least 18 years old, agree to a background investigation, have a valid driver’s license and complete a waiver of liability. Citizens can apply for the academy online by visiting www.cheyennepd.org/CPA. Registration is open from Tuesday, March 4 through Monday, March 17 or until the first 30 valid applicants register.
