Cheyenne’s Coyote Ridge Elementary welcomes Chelsea Cox as inaugural principal

New Principle Chelsea Cox (Laramie County School District 1)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Chelsea Cox has been officially approved as the principal of the soon-to-open Coyote Ridge Elementary School. The Board of Trustees confirmed her appointment during its Jan. 8 meeting, setting the stage for the school’s opening in August 2024.

Currently serving as associate principal at Johnson Junior High, Cox has demonstrated exceptional skill in providing behavioral and instructional support. Her role encompasses evaluating teachers, assisting with goal setting and developing professional learning opportunities, according to a press release by Laramie County School District 1.

Cox’s administrative skills were highlighted in her role as the district’s junior high summer school head principal. There, she managed staffing and professional development and assisted with Summer Academy programming.

Extensive Background in Student Support

Cox’s educational journey began in the classroom, teaching social studies at both Johnson Junior High and Rock Springs High School.

Before her current role, Cox worked as a student support administrator and a Tier II intervention specialist at Johnson. She established the Firebird Academy, an intervention program credited with closing achievement gaps over the last five years.

Cox’s career also includes a tenure as an instructional facilitator at Central High. She played a role in staff development, contributed to multiple Professional Learning Communities and aided in implementing the School Improvement Plan.

Cox is well equipped academically, holding a master’s degree in history from American Public University Systems and a bachelor’s degree in secondary social studies education from the University of Wyoming. She also completed a principal certificate program with a K–12 endorsement at the University of Wyoming.

The decision to nominate Cox was the result of a comprehensive hiring process involving an interview and recommendations from a diverse committee of teachers, parents, students, administrators and district personnel, according to the release.

Coyote Ridge Elementary is set to open its doors to fifth and sixth graders from Jessup, Davis, Hobbs and Prairie Wind elementary schools.
