CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Laramie County School District 1 Board of Trustees unanimously approved comprehensive roofing projects for three elementary schools at its meeting on Jan. 22.
The schools set to receive these critical improvements are Baggs Elementary, Rossman Elementary and Sunrise Elementary, which have faced challenges with their existing roofing systems, a white plastic-looking roof. These roofs have reportedly developed fractures and leaks, particularly exacerbated by the heating and cooling cycles through seasonal changes, according to board reports.
In response to these ongoing issues, the district has decided to revert to a black rubber membrane roofing system, known for its durability and resilience. This decision comes after consultations and assessments indicating the need for a more robust solution, especially considering the damage from past hail storms. Notably, such weather incidents had previously caused significant flooding at Saddle Ridge Elementary.
The board has awarded contracts to three different companies for these projects. Front Range Roofing Systems LLC has been tasked with Baggs Elementary School’s roofing repairs and replacements, with a budget not exceeding $905,000, including a 10% project contingency. Big Horn Roofing Inc. will handle the Rossman Elementary School project, capped at $817,445 plus contingency. Superior Roofing Inc. has been contracted for Sunrise Elementary School, with a limit of $944,260 including contingency.
