Academic and athletic star Janie Merritt recognized as LCSD1 Student of the Week

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — In a commendable display of academic and extracurricular talent, Janie Merritt, a senior at East High, was named Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for the week of Jan. 29.

Merritt has distinguished herself in both academics and athletics, setting an exemplary standard for her peers. As a top student in East High’s demanding International Baccalaureate program, she successfully juggles a full-diploma class schedule and multiple extracurricular activities.

Her impressive academic performance is further evidenced by her high GPA and active participation in the school’s National Honor Society. Merritt has her sights set on a nursing major post-graduation.

Not just academically inclined, Merritt is also a star on East High’s volleyball team. She was named 1st team all-conference and earned the Miss T-Bird Award as the Offensive Player of the Year. Beyond her athletic achievements, Merritt is known for her supportive nature, constantly encouraging and motivating her teammates and friends.

Her commitment extends beyond academics and sports as well. Merritt is spearheading a project to beautify the playground for the Early Childhood Development Classes’ T-Bird Preschool, demonstrating her dedication to community service and leadership.

Mathematics teacher Skyler Lashley holds a special place in Merritt’s academic journey. She chose Lashley as her favorite teacher for his kind-hearted approach and his ability to make mathematics fun.
