CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Celebrating student excellence, Central High’s Sammy Shumway has been named Laramie County School District 1’s Student of the Week for April 1. This honor highlights Shumway’s exceptional character, extracurricular involvement and academic success during his senior year.
Shumway was nominated by the selection committee for his outstanding character, extracurricular involvement and academic achievement. He is described as being a kind, respectful and compassionate individual. Shumway is a great leader who possesses an exemplary work ethic. He can always be found helping others in school or on the court, according to a press release by the district.
Shumway stands out not just for his academic prowess but also for his leadership in sports and service. As a senior, he achieved all-state honors in basketball in the same year Central High clinched the basketball State Championship. His junior year brought him all-conference honors in soccer, showcasing his versatile talent in athletics.
With an unweighted GPA of 3.882 and a weighted GPA of 4.039, Shumway’s academic achievements are equally impressive. He is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to serve a two-year religious mission in Brazil before pursuing further education at Brigham Young University. He still is unsure about what major to pursue.
Shumway’s choice of school counselor Malissa Lance as his favorite teacher underscores the importance of supportive relationships in his educational journey. Lance’s willingness to listen and provide guidance reflects the environment that has contributed to Shumway’s success.
