Bain Elementary receives new principal; associate, assistant principals appointed at East High

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Laramie County School District 1 has announced the appointment of three leaders at two of its schools.

Katie Montgomery has been hired as principal of Bain Elementary following approval at the June 24 Board of Trustees meeting. Meanwhile, David Haggerty is now serving as associate principal of East High following approval at that meeting. Evan Helenbolt has also been brought on as East’s assistant principal.

Montgomery began her career at Laramie County School District 1 as a kindergarten teacher at Goins Elementary. While at Goins, she also taught math during summer school and was a fifth-grade teacher. Additionally, she was a summer school behavior intervention specialist for the south triad.

In 2019, Montgomery joined the Prairie Wind Elementary staff as a fifth-grade teacher. She switched to teach fourth grade in 2021. During the 2022–23 school year, she was Anderson Elementary’s Behavior Intervention Specialist.

Haggerty began his career in education as a fifth-grade teacher in Fayetteville, North Carolina. While in Fayetteville, he served as assistant principal at Jack Britt High School, principal at R. Max Abbott Middle School and principal at Terry Sanford High School. In 2015, he became principal of Ponderosa High School in Parker, Colorado, and then assistant principal at Rose Hill Elementary in Commerce City, Colorado. He moved to Cheyenne in 2021 to serve as an assistant principal at East High.

Helenbolt began his educational career as a sixth-grade math instructor at Douglas Middle School. He then served as an Extensions Instructional Coach for Converse County School District 1. In that role, he worked with administration and teachers to provide authentic, engaging learning for high-achieving students districtwide.
