East High triumphs at season’s first speech and debate tournament

East team secures first place in 4A Sweepstakes at Quacktastic Extravaganza

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The East High School Speech and Debate team clinched first place in the 4A Sweepstakes at the Quacktastic Extravaganza held Nov. 1–2 in Rock Springs. Competing against 12 teams from Wyoming, East High students delivered outstanding performances.

According to East High Speech and Debate coach Marcus Viney, the Quacktastic Extravaganza is the first official tournament of the season. “Known for its quirky fundraisers and strong sense of community, this tournament is a favorite among both students and coaches,” he said in a press release by the Laramie County School District #1.

This year, the East High team had a record-breaking showing. Seven novice students took first place in their events and 21 advanced to finals or semifinals. Additionally, varsity competitors excelled, with 10 students earning first-place finishes and more than 35 advancing to finals or semifinals.

Individual Achievements

  • Emma Andrews placed sixth in Varsity Drama and reached semifinals in Program Oral Interpretation.
  • Donovan Carll won first place in Novice Extemporaneous Speaking.
  • Sadie Casey secured third in Varsity Oratory and fourth in Varsity Impromptu.
  • Avery Cicarelli placed fifth in Novice Drama.
  • Cadie Cooper earned first in Novice Lincoln Douglas and advanced to supers in Novice Congress.
  • Leila Cuthbert took second in Novice Oratory and third in Novice Impromptu.
  • Bridget DeMelfi achieved second in Varsity Poetry and fourth in Varsity POI and reached semifinals in Varsity Duo.
  • Madi Dyl secured third in Varsity Duo.
  • Chloe Fitzgerald won first in Varsity Drama, second in Varsity POI and sixth in Varsity Impromptu.
  • Mikkel Goertel placed fourth in Varsity Informative Speaking.
  • Ella Golwitzer earned second in Varsity Public Forum and advanced to supers in Varsity Congress.
  • Lillian Gonzalez took second in Novice Impromptu and fourth in Novice Extemp.
  • Addy Goodman secured first in Varsity Humor and reached semifinals in Varsity Drama and POI.
  • Uriah Graham placed fifth in Varsity Duo.
  • Rebekkah Greenwalt reached semifinals in Varsity Oratory.
  • Damien Harwell earned second in Novice Humor.
  • Jared Haynes placed second in Varsity Public Forum.
  • Samantha Jordan reached semifinals in Varsity Duo.
  • Carter Kennedy placed fifth in Novice Congress.
  • Ellie Kerschner placed first in Varsity Duo, second in Varsity Info, fourth in Varsity Humor and Oratory and sixth in POI.
  • Layla Kling placed fourth in Varsity Duo.
  • Natalyia Kopack earned first in Varsity Lincoln Douglas and second in Varsity Congress.

The East High team’s strong performance at the Quacktastic Extravaganza sets a positive tone for the rest of the season.
