Zane “Tarz” Doton Gray: 1942 – 2024
Zane ‘Tarz’ Doton Gray, 81 of Casper, Wyoming passed away peacefully on January 3, 2024 at Wyoming Medical Center.
Zane was born October 3, 1942 in Mobridge, South Dakota to Allan Doton and Margaret Ann (Phillips) Gray. In 1949, Zane’s family relocated to Chadron, Nebraska and purchased a farm south of Chadron where they raised six children, farmed, and raised cattle. Zane attended Chadron Preparatory School. In 1965 while working on a construction project in Lander, Wyoming, he met and soon married his wife and lifelong partner, Cathy (Wallace) Gray.
They enjoyed living and working on ranches in Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana for years maintaining many friendships they made throughout those years. Zane was a good storyteller and loved reminiscing with old friends about ‘the good ole days’ of ropin’, ranchin’, and rompin’; all of which is part of the cowboy lifestyle. When retirement came, they moved to Casper where they could be close to their son and grandchildren.
Zane served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict and was assigned to the 11th ACR, Black Horse Regiment. Zane seldom spoke about what the Blackhorse regiment accomplished during the year he rode with them, but they all wore the ‘rearing stallion’ patch and could say proudly that they had served and rode with the ‘best damn unit’ in the Calvary.
Zane was preceded in death by his parents, Allan and Margaret Gray; and his wife, Cathy Gray. He is survived by a son, Wade Gray, of Casper, Wyoming; three grandchildren: Gauge, Kayley and Brailyn Gray of Casper; and five siblings: Allan (Charlotte) Gray of Lander, Wyoming, Glen (Carol) Gray of Pueblo, Colorado, Diane (Steve) Lecher of Chadron, Nebraska, Darlene (Joe) Bolen of Sierra Vista, Arizona, and Karen Grover of Chadron, Nebraska.
Plans for the interment of remains at the Oregon Trail State Veteran’s Cemetery in Casper, Wyoming will be announced in the local media one month prior to the services for those who would like to attend.
Philip J. Griggs: 1945 – 2024
On January 14, 2024, Philip J Griggs, 78, of Cheyenne, lost his fight with cancer at his home with his wife, Kay of 56 years and children by his side.
Born in Kewanee, Illinois on August 9, 1945, Philip was the youngest son of the late Theodore and Dorothy Griggs. Philip lived in Decatur, Illinois until 1963 when he joined the the military. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Veteran of the Vietnam war having served 21 years as an Aircraft Electrician and a Master Aircraft Electrician Instructor. Upon retirement Philip and his family moved to St. Charles Missouri where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Columbia College.
Philip and Kay moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming in 2000. He worked at the Cheyenne Airport Golf Course for 16 years in the maintenance department. Forever a public servant Philip also served on the Wyoming Public Transit Advisory Board from 2014 – 2017 and the Wyoming Planning Commission from 2015 – 2023 where he served as the board president until 2023. In 2021 he was named Planning Commissioner of the Year.
Philip was a wonderful husband and father and devoted friend. He loved playing golf, having started the game at 18. He enjoyed meeting his friends Wednesday mornings for coffee and loved to monitor the weather for his family, especially his children who lived out of state. Philip was always quick with a joke and a smile. He loved to share past stories with his family and friends, especially those regarding his military career.
Philip is survived by his wife, Kay Griggs; his children, Steven Griggs and Shannon Wild; his two grandchildren; as well as his brothers Hayden and JD Griggs.
Philip is preceded in death by his father; mother; and his sister, Gretchen Griggs.
Randall Scott Mason: 1950 – 2024
Randall Scott Mason, 73, of Cheyenne, passed away at the Cheyenne Veteran Affairs Community Living Center on January 9, 2024, with his loving wife by his side.
He was born on February 26, 1950, in Canton, Ohio to Ronald and Florence Mason.
Randy graduated from Miami University with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. He then went on to graduate from Wichita State University with a Master of Education degree.
Randy served 27 years as an Air Force officer, retiring as a full Colonel. He had assignments to include serving as a Titan 2 missile launch officer, professor of Aerospace Studies at Ohio State University, Air Force Reserve Officer Training Program Instructor, curriculum developer and instructor, and missile squadron commander in Germany. He had three tours of duty at the Pentagon. He worked on the Air Staff, the Office of Secretary of Defense, and in his final assignment, served as the Chief of Nuclear Arms Control Division for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
After retiring, he worked for the Wyoming Department of Education, overseeing private school licensing and court ordered placements, as personnel director, and payroll supervisor. He was also the education consultant for the Senate Youth Program.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over 50 years, Bonnie; his son, Geoffrey; his daughter, Holly (husband Paul); grandchildren: Cameron (wife Allyson), Morgan, Aric, Benjamin and Bryce; one great-granddaughter, Madelyn; and three sisters. Randy was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, in the VA Chapel.
Victoria M. Pino: 1944 – 2024
Victoria M. Pino, 79, of Cheyenne passed away on January 5, 2024 in Cheyenne.
She was born in Minitare, Nebraska on December 23, 1944 to Jose and Dolores Morales. Vicki lived in Scottsbluff, Nebraska before moving to Cheyenne in 1981.
She was a certified nursing assistant for 60 years and worked at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center for 28 years.
Vicki is survived by her husband of 51 years, Roque Pino; five children: Greg Morales (Stephanie) of Cheyenne, Vince Morales of Provo, Utah, David Morales of Denver, Colorado, Delores Morales of Cheyenne, and Dolores Linderman (Logan) of Cheyenne; granddaughter, Hannah Morales of Denver; two brothers, Bobby Morales (Mary of Gering, Nebraska and Eddie Morales (LouAnn) of Las Vegas, Nebada; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; five sisters; two nephews; and a niece.
Vigil for the Deceased will be Monday, 5:00 p.m., at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel.
Funeral Liturgy will be Tuesday, 10:00 a.m., at St. Mary’s Cathedral.
Burial of her urn will be at a later date in Scottsbluff.
