GILLETTE, Wyo. — In a speech at Duke University in North Carolina on Wednesday night, former U.S. Representative Liz Cheney declared she would cast her vote for Kamala Harris in the November election.
According to The New York Times, Cheney said the decision was one that she did not make lightly.
“As a conservative and someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump but I will be voting for Kamala Harris,” Cheney said.
She also said the idea of write-in candidates was a “luxury” voters can’t afford in the election, particularly in swing states. The Times noted that Cheney had remained mum on her decision previously, even with the Harris campaign reaching out to her more than once.
The timing of her announcement stands singularly apart from the multiple endorsements and favorable speeches from Democrats and a few Republicans during the Democratic National Convention in August. It also comes just a day after an announcement from the son of late U.S. Senator John McCain, who also will be voting for Harris.
