Like many 6-year-olds, Ryker Vooge is a smart, hilarious, amazing and creative boy.
Unlike other children his age, though, Ryker has been diagnosed with emotional dysregulation — the difficulty of regulating one’s emotions that can result in extreme emotional displays. According to MedicalNewsToday.com, “These displays of extreme emotion can affect relationships, work, school and daily life.”
Picture this: You’ve just gotten home from a long day of work. The last thing you want to do is ride a roller coaster of emotions with your 6-year-old.
For Chad and Jacqui Vooge, dealing with their son Ryker’s emotional dysregulation meant long, difficult nights filled with the boy’s extreme displays of emotion. They decided they needed help and set up appointments with the Occupational Therapy department at Teton Therapy in April 2024.
According to Jacqui, “With each session we notice a difference in Ryker’s ability to feel regulated, and implement tools he learned in therapy to manage his emotions. His confidence has improved tremendously since starting therapy. When I come home from work, I can make memories with him instead of feeling at a loss. We grab his mindfulness jar, talk calmly or implement zones of regulation instead of yelling.”
Ryker’s occupational therapist at Teton Therapy, Danielle Cox, OTR/L, has seen changes in him too. “Ryker is a super fun kiddo to work with and is always so positive,” she said. “He puts in the work while always having a fun time. His parents are great at following through at home, which has significantly helped his progress.”
Jacqui adds, “Friends and family have noticed that he is calmer and easier to talk to. My husband and my relationship has improved a lot. I feel like a better parent and can make memories with my Rye Guy, instead of constantly being afraid to go home after work in fear of what the night holds. Words cannot describe how grateful we are that Ryker has started and continued with therapy!”
And the results of Ryker’s work with Teton Therapy’s occupational therapists are being seen elsewhere, too. “He has been able to excel in school and love school when we were fearful of what the school day may hold,” says Jacqui. “He still has some work to do, but I know he will meet his goals and excel in life.”
