Cheyenne braces for bitterly cold temperatures; windchill could reach minus 45 this weekend

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The National Weather Service in Cheyenne is warning of strong winds, blowing snow and accumulating snowfall impacting southeast Wyoming today, with breezy conditions spreading into the Nebraska Panhandle.

A high wind warning remains in effect until 2 p.m. today for areas including Cheyenne, with west winds of 30–40 mph and gusts of up to 60 mph expected.

Residents should prepare for dangerous windchills today and tonight. The strongest winds are forecast this morning, creating hazardous conditions mainly for travel.

Strong winds are anticipated to continue through Wednesday afternoon, with snow chances increasing across southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning.

A windchill watch has been issued for parts of east central Wyoming and the northern Nebraska Panhandle, forecasting brutally cold temperatures by Friday.

Windchill readings could drop to minus 45. This watch may extend into Sunday and include more regions of southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle.

NWS Meteorologist Mike Natoli reports that cold temperatures and gusty winds are already affecting the area, with the strongest wind gusts expected in wind-prone corridors of southeast Wyoming until midday.

Mountain snow continues, making high-elevation travel difficult. winter storm warnings are in effect for the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges through Thursday morning.

NWS Lead Forecaster Aaron Woodward highlights the continuation of unsettled weather, with a focus on very cold temperatures and extremely cold windchill values expected over the weekend. Light valley snows are possible, with the mountains likely to see significant accumulating snows next week.
