CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne residents are currently experiencing mild temperatures and dry conditions. However, a shift in the weather is on the horizon, with strong winds expected to precede snowfall and a significant drop in temperature in the coming days.

The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has issued high wind warnings for the Arlington area and portions of Carbon County, where wind gusts of 60–70 mph are anticipated through late Friday afternoon. While today marks the calmest winds in a period of notably windy conditions, the ridge building across the region will give way to gusty conditions once again on Saturday, particularly across Carbon County.

Saturday could also see relative humidity values fall below 20% in parts of eastern Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle, raising concerns for elevated to near-critical fire weather conditions during the afternoon.

A strong cold front is expected to sweep through the area late Saturday, bringing much colder temperatures and increasing chances for snow, especially in western areas. The Snowy and Sierra Madre mountains are forecast to receive significant snowfall accumulations from Saturday through Monday, with 17–28 inches of snow possible. A winter storm watch has been issued for these mountain ranges starting Saturday night.

The cold front’s arrival will mark the beginning of colder weather that will persist into early next week. Sunday will see a potent shortwave trough and its associated cold front move across the region, bringing brisk and colder weather along with snow. Accumulations are expected to be limited in the valleys but significant in the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges.

By Monday, blustery and cold conditions will continue, with slight chances for light snow. A gradual warming trend is expected to begin on Tuesday, leading to somewhat milder temperatures by midweek. However, the chance for snow showers in the mountain ranges will remain.
