Winter conditions persist in Cheyenne; lingering snow, freezing fog expected

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Residents woke up to light snowfall across the South Laramie Range and foothills early this morning. According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, this snow may transition to dense freezing fog, leading to reduced visibility throughout the morning hours.

The short-term forecast suggests that despite decreasing precipitation, snow continues in Laramie County and the south Laramie Range. While the snowfall may not accumulate significantly, freezing fog could pose additional hazards, especially for morning commuters.

Meteorologists from the NWS in Cheyenne anticipate a cool Friday for areas west of the Laramie Range and south of the North Platte River Valley, with temperatures remaining below average in the 30s and 40s. However, temperatures are expected to warm up slightly over the weekend, bringing conditions closer to normal.

The long-term forecast indicates that the region will experience a transition to warmer temperatures early next week. This change is attributed to a developing weather pattern characterized by a Rex Block over the western United States. A Rex Block is a blocking pattern where there is an upper-level high located directly north of a closed low.

While the weekend will see near-normal temperatures, a gradual warming trend is expected to begin by Monday.
