Cheyenne braces for high winds, snow, prolonged precipitation

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Laramie County is facing a series of weather advisories, as detailed by the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.

A high wind warning is impacting travel along portions of I-80 near Arlington and Elk Mountain until 9 a.m. Thursday. Concurrently, a winter weather advisory is targeting the Sierra Madre Range until 6 a.m. Friday, predicting snow accumulations of 5–8 inches and reduced visibility due to blowing snow.

The region isn’t in for a break just yet, with a slow-moving weather system poised to deliver varied precipitation from Friday through Monday, though specific outcomes remain uncertain.

Presently, Cheyenne and surrounding areas are experiencing a mostly calm weather pattern under high clouds, with some areas observing overnight temperatures in the low 30s to mid-40s. However, strong winds around 60 mph have been recorded near Arlington and Elk Mountain, expected to subside through the morning.

An upper-level ridge is currently fostering westerly winds across the area that are set to shift, introducing southwesterly flows by Friday. This transition is part of a larger system, including a trough off the Pacific Northwest, that will enhance synoptic lift across the region, particularly affecting the Sierra Madre and Snowy ranges with snowfall and blowing snow.

The weekend could see the introduction of a second system, bringing further precipitation across the region. This extended weather event is underscored by a cold front straddling Colorado’s front range into southeast Wyoming, with snow levels initially low but expected to rise through Saturday, turning snow into rain in some areas.

Forecast models diverge for Sunday, with potential for a warmer and drier day or continued precipitation, depending on the system’s track. Precipitation could persist into Tuesday, with weather conditions expected to improve thereafter as high pressure returns, promising warmer temperatures and clearer skies.
