Cheyenne braces for weekend snow as cold front shifts

Lions Park (Stew Dyer / Cap City News)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne residents can expect a cold and snowy weekend, as forecast by the National Weather Service in Cheyenne early Thursday morning. A modest snow accumulation is anticipated from Friday night through Saturday morning along I-80 from the Summit to Pine Bluffs

A cold front has recently crossed into Colorado, leaving Cheyenne in post-frontal conditions. This system triggered snow showers along the I-80 corridor last night. Post-frontal conditions will continue across the region, producing ongoing cold air movement.

As the cold front turns into a weak warm front, it will push back toward the I-80 corridor, meeting continuous cold air movement. This setup is expected to create a stationary boundary that could lead to moderate snowfall and advisory-level accumulations.

The biggest question mark regarding snow potential will be the moisture quality. High-resolution models predict that the shortwave trough passing through might enhance snowfall due to a warm, moist easterly upslope flow.

While snow showers are expected to linger into Saturday, a significant warmup will follow starting Sunday. Temperatures are forecast to jump over 20 degrees from Saturday’s highs, with conditions returning to above normal by Sunday.

The coming week will see fluctuating temperatures with multiple chances for light precipitation. A weak shortwave from Canada will bring another cold front by Monday, with temperatures settling around seasonal averages. However, no significant impacts are anticipated from this precipitation.
