Cheyenne to see storms, possibly snow into this weekend

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A highly active weather pattern is set to impact southeast Wyoming and the western Nebraska Panhandle through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.

Today and tonight, the area is expected to experience scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms, with a few of them potentially severe, especially east of Interstate 25. The primary hazards will be large hail and damaging wind gusts, with the possibility of an isolated tornado or two.

As the system progresses, widespread stratiform rain with embedded thunderstorms is likely from Friday through Sunday. Additionally, snow accumulations over 12 inches are anticipated in higher elevations above 8,000 feet, particularly in the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges. Travel impacts on the I-80 Summit between Laramie and Cheyenne are also possible due to the close proximity to the rain–snow transition zone.

The forecast warns of a complex and extremely active mid- and upper-level pattern, with multiple disturbances expected to contribute to the unsettled weather. This includes potential severe thunderstorms today, driven by a short-wave disturbance and strong lee cyclogenesis over eastern Colorado.

By the weekend, conditions are predicted to shift toward cooler temperatures with more widespread rain and snow. High-elevation snow will also be likely as temperatures fall into the 20s, suggesting significant snowfall in the mountains and mixed precipitation near Cheyenne.

Looking ahead to next week, the weather pattern remains active, with near-average temperatures gradually warming. The forecast indicates daily chances for rain showers and thunderstorms through the end of next week.
