Cold front chills Cheyenne: Snow in the mountains, thunderstorms in the plains

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne should brace for a mix of weather patterns as a cold front sweeps through the area today, bringing showers and isolated thunderstorms, primarily over the southern Nebraska Panhandle.

This morning, Cheyenne is seeing the arrival of a progressive cold front, pushing temperatures down and causing winds to turn northward and intensify. The National Weather Service in Cheyenne forecasts scattered to numerous showers spreading from the western counties this morning to the southern and eastern counties this afternoon, along with isolated thunderstorms mainly east of I-25.

Snow is expected over the higher elevations of the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges, with snowfall totals ranging from 4 to 7 inches. However, due to daylight hours, some melting is likely, reducing the need for a snow advisory.

Tonight, the region will see a quick end to precipitation as the weather system moves east, setting the stage for a cold night with clear skies as high pressure builds. Saturday offers a slight warmup with sunshine and temperatures in the mid-50s to mid-60s, although southeast winds may limit the warmth.

The forecast for Sunday predicts it to be the warmest day of the weekend, with temperatures climbing to the upper 60s and 70s. However, the approaching week will bring cooler temperatures and breezy conditions, with potential for strong westerly winds starting Monday. The NWS in Cheyenne anticipates high wind speeds, particularly in wind-prone areas of southeast Wyoming.

Looking ahead, the large-scale upper-level low-pressure system will stall over the central U.S., maintaining a cooler, unsettled pattern with chances for light precipitation through the end of next week.
