Thunderstorms, high temperatures to hit Cheyenne

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne residents should prepare for severe weather this afternoon, as the National Weather Service in Cheyenne is predicting hail, strong winds and heavy rainfall. There is a possibility of tornadoes with long-track supercells. The severe weather threat continues into Friday.

This morning, dense fog is affecting visibility between Cheyenne and Laramie, prompting a dense fog advisory. Visibility has been less than a quarter-mile all night.

Today, thunderstorms are expected to develop in southeast Wyoming. A shortwave passing over the central Rockies is causing showers and thunderstorms. These storms could start as early as late morning in the Laramie Range. Storms may produce hail, strong winds and heavy rainfall. The risk of tornadoes is present, especially with longer-track supercells.

Moisture is streaming into the area, bringing 60-degree dew points. This moisture, combined with warm air advection, creates conditions for thunderstorms. A capping inversion, a layer of warm air that prevents storms, may break by late morning, allowing storms to develop.

Friday will bring another round of storms. A stationary boundary will enhance moisture convergence, increasing the likelihood of storms. The trough axis, a line of low pressure, will pass through, providing lift for storm development. Some storms may produce large hail before transitioning to wind and heavy rainfall threats.

Looking ahead, hot weather will dominate from Sunday to midweek. High temperatures may exceed 100 degrees, especially on Monday. A ridge of high pressure will bring dry conditions, with lower chances of rain. However, isolated showers and thunderstorms may still occur.
