CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has issued a warning for near-record high temperatures today. Residents of Cheyenne and surrounding areas in Laramie County should prepare for another hot day.

“Heat advisories remain in effect for the central Nebraska Panhandle and Goshen County,” NWS Meteorologist Mike Natoli stated.

By 9 or 10 a.m., temperatures are expected to breach the 90-degree mark. The forecast predicts high temperatures to be within a few degrees of daily records.

Despite clear skies dominating most of the region, a surface low near the Montana–Wyoming–South Dakota intersection has led to a very warm night for some areas.

“A 3 a.m. temperature of 81 degrees was reported at Bordeaux,” Natoli stated, with many other areas experiencing temperatures in the 70s.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop around noon. These storms could bring strong, gusty winds and lightning, but limited rainfall.

“Expect convective activity to get a pretty early start today, kicking off around noon,” Natoli stated.

The storms will primarily produce dry microbursts, which are localized columns of sinking air within a thunderstorm that cause strong, damaging winds at the surface. Wind gusts over 60 mph are possible. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the High Plains in a marginal risk for these dry microbursts.

Looking ahead, moisture will return to the High Plains by Wednesday. This will increase the likelihood of strong thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

“Dewpoints near 60 degrees are likely from US 85 eastward,” Natoli stated.

The NWS in Cheyenne also noted that a compact shortwave is projected to pass through the region on Wednesday afternoon. This could lead to a few strong to severe thunderstorms from the Laramie Range eastward into the Nebraska Panhandle. These storms could bring all hazards, including hail and high winds.

By Thursday, a long-wave trough will move through the central and northern Rockies, bringing faster flow aloft and lingering moisture. This will result in more showers and thunderstorms in southeastern Wyoming and western Nebraska.

A frontal system on Friday will bring cooler temperatures and drier air, with only isolated showers expected on Saturday. Temperatures will rebound by Sunday, though dry conditions will persist.
