CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne residents can expect a mix of weather conditions this week, starting with gusty winds today and potential thunderstorms tomorrow. According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, showers and possibly a few thunderstorms will continue through midday. Winds could reach up to 45 mph, especially along and west of the Laramie Range.

Thunderstorms are likely on Wednesday afternoon, primarily in east central Wyoming and the western Nebraska Panhandle. These storms could become severe, posing risks of large hail, damaging winds and even a few tornadoes.

“Very steep mid-level lapse rates combined with a moist boundary layer will help support MLCAPEs [Mixed Layer Convective Available Potential Energy] of 1500–2000 J/kg,” Chris Hammer, a lead forecaster at the NWS in Cheyenne, stated.

These conditions are favorable for organized supercell structures, which can lead to severe weather.

A strong cold front will sweep through the area on Wednesday night, leading to a cool and pleasant Independence Day. Temperatures on Thursday are expected to be in the 70s, providing a comfortable setting for Fourth of July celebrations.

After the cold front, temperatures will gradually increase. Friday is expected to be dry and slightly warmer. Both the GFS and ECMWF models indicate another cold front moving in from the north on Saturday. This front will bring cooler temperatures on Sunday, with highs in the 70s to low 80s. The beginning of next week will see a return to warmer, drier conditions.
