Weekend cold front to bring brief cooldown to Cheyenne

(Stephanie Lam, Cap City News)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Thunderstorms should be expected today and tonight, especially in east central Wyoming and the western Nebraska Panhandle. These storms may become severe with all hazards possible, including hail, strong winds and even tornadoes according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.

Today in Cheyenne, expect sunny skies with a high near 85 degrees. Breezy conditions are likely, with a west wind increasing to 15–20 mph in the afternoon. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 49 degrees and a north-northwest wind of 10–20 mph gusting at up to 30 mph.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible outside of Cheyenne. Storms will likely develop in the afternoon, especially in northern and eastern areas. Expect rapid destabilization with dew points soaring into the 60s, supporting storm development. Supercells are possible, with threats including large hail, strong winds and tornadoes.

As the cold front moves through tonight, temperatures at 700 millibars, about 10,000 feet above sea level, will drop significantly, setting the stage for a cool and pleasant Independence Day. Highs will only reach the 70s, with scattered showers expected.

Another cold front over the weekend will briefly lower temperatures before they rise again. Saturday will be warm, with highs 5 degrees higher than Friday. Sunday will see cooler temperatures, with highs in the 70s due to a second cold front.

Early next week, expect warming temperatures and dry conditions. By midweek, highs will return to the 90s as a ridge builds over the western U.S.
